Fermented foods contain beneficial probiotics that support microbial balance in a healthy gut. Yet when Candida is already overgrown, these foods may feed the yeast overgrowth rather than restore balance. Some fermented foods also contain yeast or fermentation byproducts that can aggravate Candida albicans and intensify symptoms. This can slow healing and prolong discomfort.

So….What Is Candida?
Candida is a yeast, or fungus. It’s naturally present in your digestive tract. It helps you digest what you eat. It also assists in getting nutrients from food.
Your body only needs a very small amount of Candida to perform these important functions. Normally, the “good” bacteria in your gut keep Candida levels from getting out of control.
However, several common circumstances can easily lead to Candida overwhelming your “good” bacteria. These include:

All yeasts, including Candida, need sugar to thrive. Your gut microflora naturally ferments the food you eat by breaking down sugar to use as fuel. There are two main types of fermentation: alcohol fermentation and lactic fermentation, in which the lactobacillus species of bacteria convert sugars into lactic acid.
Fermentation creates nutrients, enzymes, and prebiotics. Prebiotics help feed the good bacteria in your gut. Since fermented foods are also rich in probiotics, consuming them gives you extra probiotics.
Fermented foods are also high in lactic acid, which helps slow the growth of “bad” bacteria. This is why fermented foods are shelf stable and do not spoil quickly.
Why Fermented Foods Can Be Confusing in Candida Diet
Many people feel confused when researching fermented foods and Candida. Some sources promote fermented foods for gut health, while others recommend avoiding them. The difference comes down to timing and gut balance.
Fermented foods can support a healthy microbiome when your gut ecosystem is stable. However, when imbalance exists, especially during Candida overgrowth, these same foods may contribute to further microbial disruption.
The key takeaway is simple. Fermented foods are not inherently harmful. They may simply not be appropriate during certain stages of healing. Individual tolerance, symptom patterns, and timing matter more than universal dietary rules.

Fermented Foods List
Fermented foods are a large portion of many people’s diets. If you are battling Candida overgrowth, it’s important to know which foods could be contributing to your condition. Below, I have included the fermented foods list.
Wine and Beer
Hopefully, you are already limiting alcohol. However, it is particularly important to cut out beer and wine while getting your yeast in check. Wine is not only fermented, but it is also high in sugar. In addition, beer, which is also fermented, contains gluten. All of these factors contribute to Candida.
Alcohol can also worsen leaky gut. This is one of the most dangerous impacts of yeast overgrowth. This is because it can lead to so many other symptoms and health problems. You see, once your gut is leaky, the Candida can leak into your bloodstream and colonize other parts of your body.
Alcohol also weakens your immune system. A strong immune system is needed to fight off invaders in your body. You also need it to keep your yeast population under control.
Champagne
Everyone loves the joyful effervescence of champagne bubbles. But did you know those bubbles result from the second fermentation of white wine with added sugars and yeast? That is three inflammatory foods all in one bottle!
Kefir
Kefir is usually made by fermenting cow’s milk. The microorganisms in kefir grains grow and ferment the sugars in the milk, turning it into drinkable kefir. While you can make dairy-free versions, kefir grains contain yeast and lactic acid. You do not want either of these if you are trying to treat or avoid Candida.
This is contradictory as there have been studies to argue both sides: kefir is good for candida and also efir feeds candida. So the reserch is confusing and contradictory. When in doubt, avoi it and take a probiotic without the yeast.
Yogurt
Same idea as the above kefir – it’s been said to help but also harm candida….so what do you do?
The main culture in yogurt is lactobacillus bulgaricus. It is used to ferment milk sugar. This process produces lactic acid. This lowers your pH and helps stop fungal growth. – I personally have benefited from eating PLAIN yogurt (nothing else added) but each persosn will be different. There are also non-dairy yogurt such as Coconut Cult that I reccomend BUT I only reccomend their plain, orgiginal version if you are suffering ith candida. Avoid all the other flavors until you get your gut back into balance.
Kimchi
Kimchi is shredded cabbage and radishes fermented with garlic, salt, and spices. It is rich in prebiotics that feed both the good and bad bacteria in your gut.
Kombucha
There is little regulation on commercially produced kombucha. Nothing specifically states how long it has to be fermented or whether or not it can be pasteurized. There are no rules on whether it can be carbonated after production or even run through a filter to stop any yeast strains from remaining.
It is basically a free-for-all! Therefore, when you drink kombucha, you introduce unknown amounts of bacteria to your body.
Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut is made using a lacto-fermentation. This allows airborne bacteria culture to grow on raw cabbage leaves.
Lacto-fermentation uses salt to create an acidic environment that preserves the cabbage. While this process is what gives sauerkraut its distinctly tangy flavor, it is also what adds to the population of bacteria in your gut.
Vinegar
Making vinegar is a two-step process of fermentation. It goes from a carbohydrate to an alcohol to an acetic acid. During this process, wild yeasts are added to help convert sugars into alcohol. Finished vinegar still contains those yeast cells, potentially adding to the overgrown population of yeast in your gut.
5 Diet Tips to Fight Candida Yeast Infections

1. Coconut Oil
Candida yeasts are microscopic fungi found around the skin, mouth, or gut. They’re usually harmless but may cause infections when your body’s defenses are weakened.
Plants have their own defenses against yeasts and other fungi, and some produce compounds that are toxic to fungi. A good example is lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid widely studied for its antimicrobial and antifungal effects. Coconut oil is almost 50% lauric acid. This makes it one of the richest dietary sources of this compound, which rarely occurs in high amounts in food. Test-tube studies suggest that lauric acid is very effective against Candida yeasts. As such, coconut oil may have similar effects.
For this reason, using coconut oil as mouthwash — a method known as oil pulling — may curb thrush, or Candida infections in your mouth.
Keep in mind that human studies are needed to confirm these benefits.
2. Probiotics
Several factors may make some people more prone to Candida infections, including diabetes and a weakened or suppressed immune system. Antibiotics may also increase your risk, as strong dosages sometimes kill a portion of the beneficial bacteria in your gut. These bacteria are a part of your body’s natural defenses against Candida yeasts. They protect against infections by competing with them for space and nutrients. Probiotics may help restore these populations of beneficial bacteria.
Probiotics are live bacteria often found in fermented foods, such as yogurt with active cultures. However, as mentioned above, fermented foods also contain yeast and may make matterss worse, so taking a probiotic pill is possibly a safer route than eating fermented foods during this time of healing.
A 12-week study in 215 older adults showed that taking lozenges containing 2 strains of the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri significantly reduced the amount of Candida yeasts in their mouths.
In another study in 65 people with thrush, taking probiotics significantly improved the effectiveness of a conventional antifungal treatment.

3. A Low Sugar Diet
Yeasts grow faster when sugar is readily available in their environment.
In fact, high levels of sugar in your bloodstream increase your risk of Candida infections. In one study, sugar increased Candida growth in the digestive system of mice with weakened immune systems. In a human study, rinsing with dissolved sugar (sucrose) has been linked to increased infections and higher yeast counts in the mouth.
4. Garlic
Garlic is another plant food with strong antifungal properties. This is partly due to allicin, a substance that forms when fresh garlic is crushed or damaged. Test-tube research also indicates that garlic extract may reduce yeasts’ ability to attach to the cells lining your mouth.
Keep in mind that using raw garlic in sensitive areas, such as your mouth, can be harmful and cause severe chemical burns.
5. Curcumin
Curcumin is one of the main active components of turmeric, a popular Indian spice.
Test-tube research indicates that curcumin may kill Candida yeasts — or at least reduce their growth.
Another study suggested that curcumin may reduce yeasts’ ability to attach to cells from the mouths of people with HIV. In fact, curcumin was more effective than fluconazole, an antifungal drug.
