The Best Coffee Creamers (and what I avoid)

The Best Coffee Creamers

(and what I avoid)

Why do I avoid th above proclaiemd “healthy” coffee creamers?

“but Bethany, so many health influencers are promoting these”

Yea, I know. That’s exactly what they are, “health influencers” that don’t know much abot TRUE health, nutrition, or ingredients and what they do to the body.

Just because someone on the internet promotes something, doesn’t mean it’s automatically good for you.

(By the way, I have never called myself or though ot myself as a “health ifluencer” – I think of myself as a health educator)

So what do the above coffee creamers contain that make me avoi them?

Dipotassium Phosphate

Dipotassium phosphate (K₂HPO₄) is a water-soluble inorganic salt commonly used as a food additive, buffering agent, and fertilizer.

Reasons it’s used:

– Emulsifier: Keeps oil and water from separating in products like non-dairy coffee creamers.

– Stabilizer: Prevents curdling or changing texture in processed liquids and plant-based milks (like oat milk) during heating.
– Acidity Regulator: Makes it so products mix smoothly into hot coffee or tea without feathering.

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or stomach cramps
  • Constipation
  • Headaches or dizziness
Soluble tapioca fiber

Soluble tapioca fiber is a plant-based dietary fiber made from the starchy cassava root, widely used as a low-calorie binder and sugar replacement in keto and gluten-free foods.

Common Side Effects

  • Gas and Flatulence (fermentation of the fiber by gut bacteria can lead to increased gas)
  • Bloating and Cramping
  • Stomach Pain or Nausea

Gellan Gum
Gellan gum is a plant-based food additive and gelling agent produced through the bacterial fermentation of sugar.

Reasons it’s used

– Suspends Ingredients: It ingredients from settling to the bottom in plant-based milks, juices, and nutritional drinks.

Common Side Effects

  • Bloating
  • Abdominal gas
  • Loose stools or diarrhea
  • Slower digestion

Acacia Gum

Acacia gum is the hardened sap of an Acacia tree.

Reasons it’s used

– Emulsifier: Mixes oils and water together so liquids like soft drink syrups and salad dressings do not separate.
– Stabilizer: Keeps ingredients smooth and prevents sugar crystals from forming in candies, marshmallows, and gumdrops.

Common Side Effects

  • Gas and flatulence
  • Bloating and abdominal rumbling
  • Loose stools or mild diarrhea

Natural flavors
Natural flavors are flavor enhancers derived from plants or animals that are initially sourced from nature, but are heavily processed in a lab.

How it’s made:
A single listing of “natural flavor” on an ingredient label can contain anywhere from 50 to over 100 individual ingredients.
Natural flavors undergo significant chemical processing. A natural flavor mixture can still contain up to 90% solvents, preservatives, and emulsifiers

FDA Definition:
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, natural flavors include essential oils, oleoresins, essences, extracts, or any product of roasting, heating, or enzymolysis containing the flavoring constituents derived from a plant or animal source.

Why use natural flavors?

Their sole job is to enhance or cover up the taste in processed foods, not to add nutritional value.

“Before there was health food, there was just food.

Before natural flavors, people enjoyed the flavor of the actual food”
- Bethany Cameron
Common Side Effects
  • Weight Gain / Addiction:
    • Highly palatable flavor compounds can overstimulate reward pathways in the brain, encouraging overeating and addiction.
  • Headaches and Migraines:
    • Certain chemical compounds or MSG derivatives mixed into the flavor base can induce migraines in individuals.
  • Digestive Discomfort:
    • Solvents, preservatives, or emulsifiers used to carry the flavor can cause gas, bloating, and/or gut irritation.

I have been putting butter (and / or ghee) in my coffee / matcha for over 10 years!

The key is to blend it into yoru coffee (you cannot stir it in).

Can’t do dairy? – Try goat milk ghee! Ghee has the lactose removed and goat milk is much easier to digest.

RECIPE

However, if you still cannot handle butter or ghee, the below options are also better than many other brands in my opinion.
